If you’re undertaking a renovation project, chances are you’ll be wary of keeping costs down as much as possible. Luckily, ordering and using a skip is very cost-effective, but sometimes a simple lack of research can lead to customers paying more than they need to. We’re in the business of ensuring that all our customers pay a fair, competitive price for their skips, and so we’ve put together the following article to help you reduce the cost of skip hire as much as possible.

Choose the right sized skip for your project

Skips are available in a wide range of sizes. Large skips are going to cost more than smaller skips, so it’s important you choose a skip of the right size to avoid overpaying. Many customers unfortunately make the mistake of purchasing the smallest skip for the smallest cost in a naive attempt to fit everything in. This inevitably leads them to having to buy a second skip, and ironically paying even more than they would have done if they had got a suitably sized skip in the first place.

Make the most of the room in your skip

You don’t want to have to shell out for a second skip or pay fees for overfilling, so make sure you use all the space in your skip wisely. Items such as furniture should be broken down to their core parts, rather than disposed of wholly. Cardboard boxes and other similar items should be flattened as much as possible. Also consider placing larger items into the skip first, and working your way up to the smaller items on top.

Avoid restricted items

Not everything is suitable for disposal in a skip. Certain hazardous items will be banned and may lead to charges if the rules are ignored. Ensure you read up on which items can and cannot legally be disposed of in a skip to ensure you’re not hit with any charges.

Choose a company that includes a permit

Permits are required to keep a skip on the street, and these usually require a fee. By choosing to hire a skip from a company that sorts the permit out for you, you can save time as well as money.

Hire a skip with the neighbours

If you’re friendly with your neighbours, consider asking if they have anything they need to throw out and whether they’d like to share a skip with you. This can help to slash prices in half while providing suitable waste disposal for two homes instead of just one.
